Microchipping and registering your dog or cat in Greece
Microchipping and registration are mandatory in Greece. Who does it, what you see on pet.gov.gr, and when to update the record.
In Greece every owned dog and cat must have a microchip and be registered in the National Companion Animal Registry (ΕΜΖΣ), under Law 4830/2021. A microchip without registration isn't enough: they are one process done together.
What a microchip is
A tiny chip, the size of a grain of rice, injected under the skin, usually in the neck. It carries a unique number that is read with a scanner. It is not GPS: it doesn't show where your pet is.
Who does it
Only a vet. The vet implants the chip and records your pet and your details in the registry. Owners can't do the initial registration themselves.
What you can see
On pet.gov.gr, using your Taxisnet credentials, you can see the animals registered in your name and the related digital services. (If you're a foreign resident, ask your vet how this works for you.)
When to update the record
- change of owner (e.g. adoption)
- change of address or phone number
- loss or theft of the animal
- death of the animal

Why it's worth it, beyond the law
- A lost pet with a chip is far more likely to come home: any vet or municipality can scan it.
- Without a microchip there's no EU pet passport, so no travel abroad.
- Ferries, trains and airlines ask for a health booklet showing the chip number.
Add an ID tag with your mobile number to the collar too. Whoever finds your pet can call you straight away, no scanner needed.
Penalties for animals without a microchip and registration are set by law, which changes from time to time. For the current rules, ask your vet or check pet.gov.gr.
