My cat keeps going to the litter box
If your cat keeps going to the litter box, strains and passes little or no urine, its urethra may be blocked. In male cats this is an emergency: without treatment it can become life-threatening within a day or two.
See a vet now if:
- A male cat straining in the litter box with no urine or only a few drops
- Crying in pain or constantly licking its genitals
- Vomiting, weakness or hiding
Book an appointment in the next few days if:
- It passes small amounts often, but urine does come out
- Blood in the urine
- It urinates outside the litter box when it didn’t before
In the meantime
- Look at the litter: are there normal clumps of urine or only small spots?
- If it is male and not passing urine, don’t wait to see if it passes
- Take a photo of the litter for the vet
