Itching and scratching
Itching in dogs and cats is often caused by fleas, allergies or skin and ear infections. It is rarely an emergency, but if it continues, it needs a vet.
See a vet now if:
- Sudden facial swelling, hives or difficulty breathing (possible allergic reaction, e.g. to a sting)
Book an appointment in the next few days if:
- It scratches so much that it has sores or is losing fur
- Redness, a bad smell or moist skin or ears
- It keeps shaking its head
- The itching lasts more than a week
In the meantime
- Check for fleas and ticks, especially around the neck and the base of the tail
- Check that flea and tick protection is up to date
- Never use dog flea products on cats: some are toxic to cats
