My dog has diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is often caused by a change of food or something picked up outside and passes in a day or two. In puppies and dogs that seem unwell, it can be serious.
See a vet now if:
- Blood in the stool, or black, tarry stool
- Diarrhoea with vomiting, weakness or fever
- A puppy, especially one that hasn’t finished its vaccinations (risk of parvovirus)
- It won’t drink or looks dehydrated (dry, sticky gums, sunken eyes)
Book an appointment in the next few days if:
- It lasts more than a day or two
- It keeps coming back
- It is losing weight
In the meantime
- Fresh water available at all times
- Keep a stool sample in a bag: the vet may ask for it
- Don’t give it human anti-diarrhoea medicines
