My dog is vomiting
A single episode of vomiting in a dog that is otherwise lively is often caused by something it ate. Repeated vomiting, or vomiting with other symptoms, needs a vet.
See a vet now if:
- It retches without bringing anything up and its belly is swelling (possible stomach twist, especially in large dogs)
- Blood in the vomit, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
- It ate something toxic or something that could block the gut (a bone, a toy, a sock)
- It vomits again and again within a few hours or can’t keep even water down
- It is weak, listless or its belly is painful
- It is a puppy, elderly or has a long-term health problem
Book an appointment in the next few days if:
- Vomiting lasts more than a day, even if it is lively
- Vomiting that keeps coming back every few days
- It eats less or is losing weight
In the meantime
- Note when it started, how many times and what the vomit looked like (a photo helps)
- Leave a little fresh water available
- Ask your vet when and what to feed it next
- Don’t give it human medicines
