My dog is limping
Limping can be caused by something simple, like a thorn in the paw, or by an injury or a joint or ligament problem.
See a vet now if:
- It won’t put any weight on the leg, or the leg is at an odd angle
- An open wound, bleeding, or limping after a road accident or fall
- Sudden weakness or paralysis in the back legs
- Swelling that is growing quickly
Book an appointment in the next few days if:
- It has been limping for more than a day or two
- It limps when it gets up and then “warms up”
- It keeps licking one leg or toe
In the meantime
- Check the paws and between the toes for thorns, grass seeds and cuts
- Limit running, jumping and stairs
- Don’t give it human painkillers: many are toxic to dogs
